Ädelbrook: A Case Study in Respite for Families Caring for Children with I/DD
The California Central Valley has witnessed a significant rise in reported cases of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Situated in this region, the EMC Health Foundation covers 19 zip codes across southern Stanislaus and northern Merced Counties. Its primary focus is utilizing charitable funds to assist families, particularly those in middle-income brackets, in accessing essential services and care.
In 2023, the EMC Health Foundation commissioned a study aimed at developing a respite care program to support families caring for children with I/DD. This program would prioritize in-home respite care and potentially establish a week-long summer camp, offering parents much-needed respite.
Upon research, two nationally recognized programs catering to individuals with I/DD stood out: Jill’s House in Vienna, Virginia, and Ädelbrook, located in Cromwell, Connecticut.
This case study delves into the intricacies of Ädelbrook, forming the conclusion of our two-part analysis.
